for october's creator spotlight, we’re thrilled to welcome ammy, the vibrant maker behind @lavenderbeecaps! with a keen eye for detail and her signature handcrafted artisans, join us as we dive into her story and discover what keeps the buzz going. welcome, ammy!

how it all began

what's the origin story behind lavenderbeecaps? What inspired you to start creating them?

lavenderbeecaps actually started out as a small pandemic hobby while i was in college. i originally opened an etsy shop after realizing there was a real demand for cute artisan keycaps- but not enough of them on the market! around that time, job hunting in the animation industry was extremely tough. i had taken mentorship courses and quickly realized i might struggle working under someone else, since i thrive when i have full creative freedom.

as an animation student with some 3D modeling experience, i wanted to find a way to apply my skills to something tangible. i started experimenting with resin-it was messy and challenging at first, but over time i improved and gained confidence. When i saw how much people loved my work, that encouragement really pushed me to keep going. that’s how lavenderbeecaps was born!

how did you get into mechanical keyboards?

i first got into mechanical keyboards when i was gifted my very first ducky one keyboard during covid! a the time, i was getting into gaming setups since we were all spending so much time at home. i’d always used practical setups and standard logitech keyboards, so i had no idea keyboards could look and sound so beautiful. i started watching creators like rice.cloud and was completely inspired by all the cute, aesthetic builds and satisfying typing tests i saw online-that’s when i fell down the rabbit hole.

inside the creative process

you've created many designs based on our keycap sets! what made you want to make artisans for our keycaps, and which line was your favourite to create?

it’s been one of my greatest joys to create artisan keycaps inspired by osume’s keysets! when i first joined the keyboard hobby, there weren’t many soft, neutral, or pastel keysets available. then i discovered osume and instantly fell in love- especially with the sakura set. it struck the perfect balance between minimalism and charm, with delicate novelty artwork that resonated with my own dainty style.

my favorite series to create would have to be the mori series! i think my mushroom hani frog design fit the theme so perfectly, and i had such a fun time experimenting with color variations and personalities for each keycap.

we're sure you love all your creations—but how do you balance making what you love with what your audience wants?

that’s definitely one of the biggest challenges i face when planning new drops! i always take notes on what my community wants-whether it’s feedback from my market events, discord server, or social media. if there’s strong demand for a certain colorway or theme, i’ll usually find a way to include it in an upcoming release.

that said, it’s just as important for me to stay true to my own creative voice. most of my monthly releases are pieces i personally feel inspired to create, but i always include at least one design that’s been highly requested by my audience. it’s all about finding the right balance between community input and personal passion.

balancing creativity and business

what has been the most memorable moment of being a creator and business owner?

one of my most unforgettable moments was being a vendor at anime expo’s artist alley this summer! i had attended for years as a fan, always admiring the artists there, and it felt surreal to finally have a booth of my own. it was actually my first time applying-and since the event is so competitive i wasn’t sure I’d make it in.

preparing inventory was intense and overwhelming, but it was so worth it. i was blown away by how many followers came by to say hi and share how much my creations meant to them. we sold so many pieces that weekend, and i was beyond touched by the love and support. as someone who’s naturally introverted, managing a four-day event was outside my comfort zone-but i was so proud of myself and my small team for powering through such a hectic, rewarding experience.

what has been some of your biggest challenges running your own business, and how did you overcome them?

taking the leap to pursue lavenderbeecaps full-time was one of the hardest decisions i’ve made. i essentially paused my animation career path to dive into a niche hobby-and not everyone around me understood that choice. on top of that, there were very few resources available when i started. i had to teach myself through constant trial and error, and my failure rate was extremely high that first year. but i never gave up, and all those experiments eventually paid off. i became more confident, and more efficient in my craft.

in the beginning, i was working out of my family’s kitchen and then out of my tiny bedroom, which wasn’t safe due to resin fumes and made it impossible to separate work from personal life. eventually, i moved into my own place so i could dedicate a room to my studio. that change helped my health and workflow tremendously, though i still struggle with overworking at times. i’ve been learning to take breaks, go on walks, lift weights, cook, paint, and set boundaries for myself. it’s been a process of learning how to care for both my creativity and myself.

what are some of your future goals for Lavenderbeecaps?

i still feel like lavenderbeecaps has so much room to grow! in the future, i’d love to branch out beyond handmade resin pieces and explore other product types-like plushies, toys, or home decor. i want to keep designing functional, beautiful objects while giving myself more breathing room from the manual crafting process, since keycap making is so labor intensive. ultimately, my goal is to continue creating pieces that bring comfort, joy, and charm to everyday life-just in new and exciting forms.
