introduction to keycap profiles

keycap profiles determine the way the keycaps are shaped, and different profiles can drastically affect how your typing experience feels, looks, and sounds. osume utilizes two different profiles, cherry and marshmallow. both keycap profiles provide an entirely different typing experience, and which one you choose purely depends on your preferences. here is an example of some of the most common profiles in the industry:

cherry profile

our classic osume keycaps currently utilize cherry profile keycaps, which are the most popular option when it comes to keycap profiles. with a more sculpted shape, differing from row to row, cherry profile provides a more ergonomic and natural typing feel/experience.

mounting method

because our keycaps utilize cherry profile, initially mounting on the keycaps can be a confusing task for some as the keycap shape differs depending on which row the keycap is intended to be used on. our keycap packaging is carefully arranged to guide you through the keycap mounting process, arranging keys by row, per tray. we highly recommend mounting your keycaps row by row to avoid confusion, or mixing up of keys.

non-suitable keys

due to cherry profile's ergonomic benefits, we do not recommend using keys that are non-suitable for the intended row. if your keyboard utilizes a non-conventional layout that the cherry profile does not cover, we recommend purchasing our keycaps in our marshmallow profile instead, which uses a uniform profile. 

marshmallow profile

our latest profile addition are our original 9.4mm tall marshmallow profile keycaps. this profile utilizes a uniform profile, offering flexible layout options, allowing you to use any keycap on any position, regardless of row. we chose to develop a uniform profile as it brings unique advantages, including better ergonomics at lower typing angles, a more consistent sound across different rows and easier changeability. our legends will maintain the same font choice and size you love and expect from us as we believe the font aligns with the goals and aesthetics of our marshmallow keycaps. we've decided to give modifier keys a fresh look with icon-style designs for a simpler and unique appearance. we recommend this profile for those looking to use non-conventional layouts, or want a more consistent typing feel/sound. 

during development, we opted to make our marshmallow keycaps a bit taller at 9.4mm compared to other popular uniform profiles like xda, kam, and dsa. this added height offers a more natural transition for those accustomed to cherry profile and made typing more engaging and energetic as the keycaps sits closer to your fingers. as for the shape, we've decided on a slightly rounded appearance while also focusing on offering more surface area than some uniform profile counterparts for a more comfortable typing experience. a plus that the round and bubbly appearance makes it literally resemble a marshmallow!
